Red wine is one of the most common types in the world. There are numerous different forms of red that come from their own specific regions. It is often difficult to choose the very best wines around. However, there are several truly exceptional ones that deserve special attention.

Cabernet Sauvignon

If readers have heard about this wine it is not surprising. Cabernet Sauvignon is actually the most planted grape of any wine. It goes with practically any meal, making it popular with restaurant-goers. The wine tends to have flavours such as cherries and currants, along with different types of spice.

Merlot

This well-know type of wine usually goes best with dishes that contain duck or chicken. Whilst more limited than cabernet sauvignon, it is still exceedingly popular with wine drinkers. It is the second most planted grape. People who are just beginning to get into wine tasting will find merlot to be a great starting point.

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is one of the more versatile wines on the market. The taste of it can vary greatly depending on where the grapes have grown. Despite this, it is almost always a juicy wine with high alcohol content. It tends to have a spicy strawberry taste. Zinfandel can be drunk with pork ribs, pasta dishes or pizza.

Syrah/Shiraz

This type of wine is one of the more bold forms of red. It is spicy, peppery and rich. Blackberry is often one of the main bases of it. The wine is best enjoyed with simple, salty dishes such as cheese and meats.

Malbec

Malbec was originally made in France. However, its most famous incarnation is produced in Argentina. It is an easy-drinking wine, with plum and cherry notes to it. It can be paired with dishes that contain leaner meats, as well as spicy foods.
